In 1937, a young married couple opened Polk’s Garage to serve motorists in the South Cherokee County community of Wells, Texas. By working long hours and anticipating the future needs of their growing customer base, Hazel and H.C. Polk expanded their business by selling wholesale gasoline to loggers in the area. H.C. would often drive to an East Texas refinery at the end of his workday to pick up a truckload of gasoline for the next day’s business. That drive, initiative and desire to serve their community transformed this family-owned oil company into a multi-million dollar subsidiary of a large grocery store chain.
